Fuchs Overdrive Supreme 50
Posted: 1/26/04
Fuchs Overdrive Supreme 50-watt
in creme tolex
Andy Fuchs is building
some very popular amplifiers that are versatile and extremely toneful.
Let's cut to the chase...they are often compared to the renowned Dumble
Overdrive Special sound. Tonally-speaking, there is good reason
for that. Esteemed players such as Robben
Ford and Larry Carlton, both
notable Dumble
users, are often cited as references when trying to describe the sonic
signature of the Fuchs' overdrive tones. However, to pigeonhole the
Fuchs as merely a clone would not be entirely fair...the channel-switching
design features reverb, an adjustable onboard effects loop, and a myriad
of EQ options...all for considerably less than one would pay for the "real
deal." The Fuchs is certainly inspired by the tones of other highly-regarded
amplifiers; yet it has its own set of merits and exciting sounds.
It is not the first amp to be closely compared to the classic designs of
its predecessors.
Fuchs has been known for working his magic on various amplifiers....he
has offered aftermarket modifications for a variety of amplifiers sent
to him by a growing clientele. Now focusing on his own line of products,
the Overdrive
Supreme series is making its mark in the world of refined boutique
amps. For this feature, we are looking at a 50-watt Overdrive Supreme
head.

Jason's Quick Summary:
|
| WHY BUY?- A highly versatile
channel-switching amplifier, available in a variety of power ratings and
configurations...30w, 50w, 100w....150 WATTS!!! Heads and combos
are offered. Often compared to the illustrious Dumble Overdrive Special
sound, fantastic sustaining overdriven tones are waiting for users who
know how to work such a touch-sensitive design. The good stuff doesn't
stop there though...the clean sounds are quite useful. A nice
reverb and flexible effects loop are part of the package. While expensive,
the Fuchs ODS-50 represents a solid value when compared to its competitors.
A wealth of tones are there for the taking if the guitarist has the patience
to fully explore this product. |
WHY BYE?- "Touch-sensitivity"
is a catch-phrase that is often thrown around in the world of amplifiers
these days. The Fuchs is a very sensitive extension of the player...it
is an instrument itself (which can be a good thing)...but it needs to be
finessed, in my opinion, for optimal results. Heavy-handed players
might not appreciate the feel and subtleties of this amp as much as those
who can gently caress the notes and let them bloom (pardon the dramatic
descriptions )
I know of a number of players who love the sounds of this amplifier, but
they try it themselves and express frustration at not being able to get
what they want out of it. At the risk of sounding condescending,
it can be a difficult plug-in and play amp. It takes some tweaking
to explore all of the tonalities available in this model. The experience
of playing this amp has helped me to try and improve my own touch and phrasing
with the guitar. One other drawback is that the functional Artist
Package footswitching system is not a standard offering....it is a very
expensive option ($500 US) , yet vital to having the most flexibility and
convenience. |
